Duke Energy Gift Makes CCTC “Green for Good”

Sumter, SC (11/30/2023) — In a significant stride toward advancing hands-on learning in the field of biology, Central Carolina Technical College (CCTC) proudly announces a transformative contribution from Duke Energy.

The esteemed energy company has generously donated $5,000, allowing for the purchase of a new greenhouse at the college’s main campus.

“We at Duke Energy believe in the importance of partnering with educational institutions to bring the classroom to life,” said Duke Energy Foundation’s Quinetta Buterbaugh, district manager of Government and Community Relations for Clarendon, Kershaw, Lee, Sumter and Williamsburg Counties. “This Duke Energy Foundation grant is one example of how partnerships create opportunities to deliver material in a new and exciting way. I’m looking forward to seeing what grows from this gift to Central Carolina Technical College.”

The greenhouse stands as a testament to Duke Energy’s commitment to the environment and climate resiliency, serving as a dynamic hub for immersive, hands-on learning experiences for students. Under the guidance of dedicated faculty, students will have the unique opportunity to witness theoretical classroom discussions seamlessly come to life.

Orlando Robinson, chair of the CCTC Science Department, affirms, “This commitment to defining and solving problems holistically is at the heart of who we are as an institution of higher education.”

Central Carolina science, natural resources management and environmental studies faculty, as well as Biology Club students, have exciting plans in store for the greenhouse, utilizing it for a multitude of purposes. From cultivating plants to meet diverse curriculum objectives to potentially featuring in the Biology Club’s annual fundraising sale, the greenhouse emerges as a versatile and invaluable resource.
