Central Carolina Technical College hosts visitors from the South Carolina Department of Veterans’ Affairs
SUMTER, SC (06/07/2023) Central Carolina Technical College’s TRIO Veterans Upward Bound program recently hosted Alford Taylor, senior operations coordinator and Kailay Washington, operations coordinator from the South Carolina Department of Veterans’ Affairs (SCDVA) to tour the college campus and Veterans Upward Bound (VUB) program.
The SCDVA representatives saw firsthand the impact of VUB for the CCTC veteran community and acknowledging that veterans have a presence and space at the college. Their visit demonstrated to VUB participants and CCTC the strong level of support from the SCDVA and South Carolina leadership.
“Our VUB is an important option for those just separating from the military and those who have been out of the military for longer,” says director of TRIO Student Support Services Patty Magyar. “The VUB supports veterans who choose education as their post-military path. This includes educational skill-building, assistance with financial aid and admissions paperwork.”
Other services within the VUB program include tutoring services, academic and career assessments and financial literacy. To be eligible for VUB’s benefits, a student must meet one of the following qualifications: be a veteran with other than a dishonorable discharge, have served more than 180 days, activated while on reserve status, discharged due to service-connected disability, be a first-generation college student, qualify for federal financial aid or be out of school for at least five years.
