“Come one, come all,” said Nicole Miles as Central Carolina Technical College gears up for a unique event coming to Sumter.
CCTC will host “Pit Stop Like a Pro” on Thursday, Aug. 29, at its main campus, 506 N. Guignard Drive.
What makes this “one-of-a-kind” event worthwhile, Miles said, is special guest NASCAR driver Kyle Weatherman. Born in Wentzville, Missouri, Weatherman was 17 when he moved to North Carolina to pursue racing professionally. He began racing in the NASCAR Xfinity Series in 2019 and “firmly believes he can always outperform his equipment,” according to his biography. He has earned multiple top 10s every year and continues to showcase his talents no matter what car he races in. Following his mechanical passions, Weatherman also works directly for Chevrolet and Hendrick Motorsports with their Simulation and Development Program.
Weatherman will venture to Sumter to sign autographs, take pictures and meet and greet attendees among all the fun the college intends to offer.
At this free community event, attendees will have a chance to participate in a virtual reality race car simulator, which allows participants to experience the rush of race car driving through VR goggles, as well as test their speed in the pit crew challenge. There will also be mini racetrack activities and other simulators as well.
Because many of the activities and simulators require participants to be ages 10 and older, CCTC has created a Kids’ Zone for younger attendees that will include facepainting, games and other fun activities. Families can also browse the selection of classic cars that will come from collectors across the county.
In between the fun, be sure to grab a bite to eat and a sweet treat, as Simply Southern BBQ, What The Food Truck, Sweet Frog, Kona Ice and other food trucks will be on site.
CCTC is also offering attendees a chance to win two grandstand tickets to the NASCAR Cup Series Southern 500, happening Sunday, Sept. 1, at Darlington Raceway. For your chance to win, enter at cctech.edu/pitstop. You must be present at the event to win.
“We’re inviting all of the community to come and participate in this event,” Miles expressed. “I think it’ll be exciting for those to attend and exciting to meet a professional driver and take photos with him!”
The event will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. at the college’s main campus.
