Central Carolina Technical College student receives Outstanding College Student of the Year at TRIO conference
Sumter, S.C. – Central Carolina Technical College student and Clarendon County resident Shaquan Brown received the Outstanding College Student of the Year award at the 2016 Wanda Hendricks Bellamy Student Leadership Conference (WHBSLC) held in Myrtle Beach in January.
The WHBSLC is a TRIO conference that teaches students how to be successful leaders in college and future career endeavors. Students attend workshops, formal banquets and networking events to enhance their leadership skills. This year’s theme was G.L.O.W. (Go Lead Our World).
Shaquan Brown not only received the Outstanding College Student of the Year but was nominated and accepted to participate in the Emerging Student Leadership Institute. This gave him an opportunity to participate in a day of advanced leadership workshops with TRIO students from across the state of South Carolina. Shaquan also received third place in the G.L.O.W Art Contest. Artwork was judged on creativity, theme and skillfulness
TRIO is a federally funded post-secondary education program designed to provide academic assistance and support to CCTC students who meet the eligibility requirements. Federal guidelines direct the program toward students who are from low-income families, first-generation college students and students with documented disabilities. Students must also demonstrate an academic need for our program.
