Purpose of the South Carolina Environmental Training Center
In 1981, Sumter Area Technical College (now Central Carolina Technical College) was designated by the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control as the state training center for water and wastewater operators. The center was originally funded with Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) grant funds to assist the states in implementing the more stringent treatment technology required by section 109 (b) of the Clean Water Act.
In 1982, the State Board for Technical and Comprehensive Education authorized the construction of a separate facility to house the training center, naming the facility the South Carolina Water Quality Institute. Subsequently, the Sumter Area Technical College Commission approved a plan to expand the mission of the Water Quality Institute to include all areas of environmental training and approved the name change to the South Carolina Environmental Training Center (SCETC) to reflect this expansion of mission.
Today, the SCETC continues to provide diverse, high quality training programs to professionals throughout the Southeast.
