How to Apply for Financial Aid

Applying for Financial Aid

Step 1: Complete and submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to the US Department of Education. Feel free to come to the Student Services Center, Building 300, for assistance in filling out the form. A computer lab is available in the center for students to complete their FAFSA applications.

You may submit the FAFSA electronically at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/. You may "sign" the application online by applying for a PIN number at http://www.pin.ed.gov/. Electronic application increases the timeliness and efficiency of processing the FAFSA application.

FAFSA applications or renewals must be submitted annually for the new academic year, which begins each fall semester. Applications can be submitted after January 1st of each year. It is recommended that you apply as far in advance as possible. Some funds are limited and awarded on a first-come first-served basis.

Step 2: Talk with a financial aid counselor about grants, loans, or scholarships for which you may be eligible. (See "More Details about Applying for Financial Aid" section below for a discussion of various options.)

Step 3: Before you accept any financial aid, be sure to complete a Financial Aid Memorandum of Understanding.

In order to maintain financial aid, you must make progress toward your academic goal and maintain a certain grade-point average to demonstrate success. Be sure to consult the Standards of Progress for Financial Aid outlined in the Student Handbook. Ask questions if you do not understand the requirements. You do not want to end up repaying the financial aid.

Applications for Financial Aid
FAFSA applications can be submitted prior to being admitted to a program of study. However, the financial aid application cannot be considered for award until the applicant is accepted into an eligible program. Completed applications received by April 1 of each year will receive priority over applications received after that date.

Verification
At least 30% of all applications for financial assistance are selected for verification by the Central Processor. This process requires you to submit documentation to verify certain data contained on the Free Application for Federal Aid (FAFSA). If you are selected for verification, you will be notified by the Financial Aid Office. You and your parents (if applicable) should keep a copy of federal tax returns and W-2 documents, which may be needed to complete the verification process. You are required to complete the verification process within thirty days after being notified by the school.

If you are expecting to receive any type of aid from a source other than Central Carolina Technical College, you must send a copy of the award notice to the Financial Aid Office. If you are enrolled in more than one college in the same semester, you may only receive financial assistance from one college at a time.

If you apply for assistance after July 1 for fall or November 1 for spring semester, you should not expect aid to be finalized before classes begin. However, every effort will be made to make an award provided the file can be brought to completion. The Deferred Payment Plan is made available through the Central Carolina Technical College Business Office. Information regarding the payment plan may be obtained from the Business office or by clicking on the link above.

The School Code for Central Carolina Technical College is 003995. Each college is assigned a six-digit code, and this code must be included on the FAFSA in order for a college to receive your information.
