Check out this incredible copper awning that CCTC’s Welding Department made! All proceeds from its sale will go towards the Welding Tuition Assistance Program for the Summer Semester!

New Additions to the Welding Program

As we close out the fall 2016 semester, it is a good time to reflect on a few additions to the welding program. The first addition to the welding program is our new pipe welding instructor, Timothy “Lucas” Bishop. Lucas is a graduate of Central Carolina Technical College and has worked in several different welding fields including welding on gas turbines at General Electric in Greenville and welding on piping at International Paper in Eastover. We are excited to have him as a part of the welding team at CCTC and we are looking forward to his additional energy and expertise.

A second addition to the welding program is our new RIDGID pipe beveler which was purchased with funds from the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Improvement Grant (Perkins IV). This new tool has been a great help to the pipe welding program already. You can see pipe welding student, William Cook, as he prepares the pipe coupons for the final practical test for the 2016 fall semester in pictures on this blog.

You may also have noticed the changes in the outside work area behind Building 400. We are continuing to make the simulator and other work spaces more organized and efficient.

Stay tuned for more news from the welding department at CCTC!

Welding update 6/23/2016

We are half way through our 2016 summer semester and CCTC advanced pipe welding students are preparing to graduate. The students have been hard at work fabricating pipe to be installed on our jobsite simulator, practicing their 6G 2″ XX wall tests, and practicing both 316 and super duplex stainless pipe. Here are a few pictures of the simulator piping being fabricated and installed.

We have 11 welding students that will be graduating this semester and joining the welding workforce but some students have already been accepted into summer internships. CCTC welding has formed a partnership with a pipe and vessel fabrication company located in Columbia SC to allow students the opportunity to gain industry experience and work their way into full time positions.

Austin Mizell (Left) and Drew Bracken (Right) have both passed a 3″ super duplex pipe test which certifies them to weld at our partner company.

Our students brought home first place and third place awards at the 2016 South Carolina Technical College welding competition. Here are our winners.

CCTC Welding prepares for competition.

As the Spring semester comes to an end, CCTC welding students prepare to head to the 34th annual South Carolina Technical College Welding Competition on April 21st and 22nd, 2016. Six of our talented students will compete in various welding processes at the competition against twelve other technical colleges from around the state.

Below is a picture of a student preparing his pipe pieces for the competition.

Students not competing this year were busy working on our construction simulator. CCTC has one of the most complex real world experiences for students looking to enter the welding industry as an industrial welder. Our construction simulator is a two story structure where students have to fabricate piping pieces just as they would in real world industrial situations. The students use blueprints, math, rigging, and welding to form the correct piping pieces and connect them from opposite ends of the structure. Some piping runs from the bottom floor to the top floor.

In the pictures below you can see students fabricating and preparing pieces to be welded into the existing pipe structure.
