Occupational Outlook for HVACR Technicians
The United States Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) tracks over 700 occupations in 300 industries.
- Their projected growth for these 700 occupations during the time period between 2010 and 2020 is 14.3%.
- Their projected growth for the HVACR industry during this time period is 34.4%.
- They estimate that 31.2% of the HVACR industry workforce is baby boomers that will retire during this time and need to be replaced.
- As 78 million baby boomers retire, there are only 40 million Millennials to replace them. If the HVACR industry can recruit the same proportional share of the workforce as it does today, there will be roughly half as many people to employ as there was in the past.
- In summary, 65.6% of the people in the HVACR industry in the year 2020 will be people not in the HVACR industry in the year 2010!
When Kip Bagley of EMCOR took the stage he said I understand most HVACR programs have more job openings than students to fill. However, did you know that the companies interested in hiring your graduates include: EMCOR, Carrier Commercial, Trane Service, Johnson Controls, Siemens, and McKinstry?
Bagley further explained that these companies are just a few of the over 1,400 members of the Mechanical Service Contractors of America (MSCA) looking to fill jobs across the United States. The message was clear, MSCA contractors want to work with HVACR educational programs to fill the positions they have throughout North America.
Many of the HVACR jobs going unfilled provide the potential to earn a six digit per year salary, health insurance, pensions, computers, service vehicle, uniforms, lifelong learning opportunities, college credits, certifications, and a career with unlimited opportunity for growth and advancement. Bagley wants to make certain that instructors know of these opportunities to help their students make the best choices for their careers.
His goal in attending was to build a partnership between the MSCA member companies and the HVACR educational programs located through the United States and Canada. He encouraged attendees to find a local affiliate by visiting http://www.mcaa.org/directory/local.cfm?s=x. HVACR instructors should reach out to invite local MSCA contractor members to visit their programs, join their advisory boards, and start working together.

This past Saturday three of our students from the HVAC/R program had the opportunity to make Industry connections with several hundred vendors and HVAC Contractors from all over South Carolina at the annual SCAHACC Convention held at the Grande Dunes Marriot in North Myrtle Beach.
These students competed in the “Technician Challenge” where they got to compare their skills with seasoned Technicians from all over the State. They did an excellent job in the challenge and made many contacts with potential employers.
