The Pharmacy Technician program at Central Carolina Technical College is designed to prepare individuals to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to function in a modern pharmacy environment. The curriculum provides classroom instruction that is coordinated with the texts and laboratory activities. Students will obtain a broad knowledge of the actions and uses of drugs, pharmacology, calculating proper dosages, and proper preparation for dispensing of medications to patients. Students will participate in simulated pharmacy technology laboratory activities as well as actual clinical experiences where they will increase their management, organizational, interpersonal and other pharmacy-related skills. They will learn to operate pharmacy computer programs and equipment to prepare labels, profiles, charges, credits and inventory control.
Pharmacy technicians are allied health professionals that assist and support licensed pharmacist in providing and dispensing medications and other health care product to patients within health care settings. Under the direction of a pharmacist, the pharmacy technician performs pharmacy-related functions, in compliance with specific policies and procedures that provide optimal pharmaceutical care. Pharmacy technicians are in high demand in health care and in the pharmaceutical industry. Job opportunities for pharmacy technicians are good, especially for those with previous experience, formal training, or certification according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Possible career opportunities for pharmacy technicians include working in a hospital or clinic setting, working in a nursing home or assisted living complex, or working at a store location that includes pharmacy services. Pharmacy technicians work in clean, organized, well-lighted, and well-ventilated areas.
